I have always had a commitment to the mystical tradition in art. Painting has continued to be about the relationship between the physical and the metaphysical. The journey in my painting has been about the search for the “spiritual”, an attempt to illuminate the unknowable, the inner eye, the animus.

In my earlier work there was more interest in abstraction from nature; specifically, landscape. Later, botanical forms dominated but soon gave way to using pictorial elements derived from nature along with the more decorative approach of calligraphic line. Additionally, naturalistic color evolved to the highly saturated look of Hindu art. The linear aspects of Italian ornamentation such as grotesques have been highly influential in my recent work, a by-product of repeated trips to Italy. Organic forms still remain, but whose meaning fluctuates.

My purpose is echoed in the words of Morris Graves: “I paint to rest from the phenomena of the external world—to pronounce it—and to make notations of its essences with which to verify the inner eye”.
